Stories I Wrote On The Way To And From Work 1
The 1387th Person To Fall Back To Earth
By the time the 500th person had done it, it was almost starting to seem common place.
Which seems odd,if you think about it, the idea that people going up into space and jumping back down would be commonplace, but then there you go, that's us: we take the miraculous for granted if it happens often enough.
But! No time to be thinking about fried chicken Doritos, right now! You stand on the edge of the platform. You think if they had not accidentally left this capsule up here, the second man might not have made his way up to jump out (landing safely), the 3rd, 4th, and 5th may not have followed, with others never coming, either, no 1st woman, no first toddler, no first elderly married couple, etc etc and so on, until you stand here: Number 1,387.
Not everybody wants to jump out of space, it’s true, but some do: you, the tattooed girl impatiently clearing her throat behind you, the Miami insurance salesman who felt lost after his daughter died, lost enough to buy a spacesuit, climb up the tether, watch the downloadable instructional video, and then jump, carefully holding his arms and legs just so, just as you will do in a moment, your own reasons for jumping being your own reasons.
Not everybody wants to, but you do. Why is your business. You jump.
In 250=1 I write stories that are exactly 250 words long, including the title. This one, like I said, I wrote on the way to work, dictating it as I drove.
